1962 - My mother made me a Martha Washington case. Hope I have a Happy birthday.
1963 - Today I got a Japanese Bride doll, a jewel box and a very pretty cheery cake.
------------------------------------------------------
Note: I don't remember what happened to the Japanese Bride doll. The jewlry box got left behind in the house in Georgia, I think since I haven't found it here in Wyoming. And I'm sure it was a cheery cake, but it was actually cherry.
Life is a book. Each day is a new page. May your book be a best seller with adventures to tell, lessons to learn and tales of good deeds to remember.

Happy Moon Day! July 20, 1969
42 years ago today, Neil Armstrong became the 1st man to walk on the moon! It's hard to believe we've reached the final flight for the space program already! What were you doing on Moon Day back in 1969?
I was (according to my diary)..."I'm now listening to the broadcast of the Apollo. They landed on the moon just perfect. They are going to step out on the surface of the moon soon. Well, they just did it! At 10:56 est Armstrong septted out on the surface. I was downstairs in the living room with Nancy, Susan and Mom."

Today In History... (Two items)
July 16, 1956…In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus gave its last performance under the big top canvas tent. As the circus thereafter became an indoor operation, LIFE magazine reported that "a magical era had passed forever."
July 16, 1969…Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Florida, and began the first manned mission to land on the moon.
My Diary Diddle for this day read..."Today the astronauts took off for the moon. I heard the blastoff and it just sent chills all over by body. It was a perfect liftoff and they are still going toward the moon. They are Armstrong, Alrin and Collins. It just seems almost impossible for someone to be going to the moon. I'm happy too that I'm living in this phase of history".

Diary Diddle - July 15
1969 - Tomorrow the astronauts go to the moon.
1970 - Dad finally called last night. We each got to talk to him. My brakes kept almost failing and so mom took my car to Moultrie to get fixed. We had family night tonight and I gave the lesson on honoring your name.

Diary Diddle - July 4
July 4 - 1970
Tonight I had another date with Clayton. We went and saw "Paint Your Wagon". Joanie and Bruce wanted to see it so we rode with them. After the movie we came home and had some homemade ice cream. After we finished, Clayton and I went on the porch for awhile. All we did was talk and hold hands. When it came time for him to leave he gave me a big kiss right on the mouth. It was really quite an experience.
-------------------------------------------------------
Note: So this was my first real kiss and it was from Clayton and I was almost 17 years old. Isn't that sweet?
July 5 - 1970
This morning all of us including Clayton went to Tifton for Fourth of July reunion. Most of the morning Clayton and I just sat on the tractor holding hands. Later in the afternoon we all went and played softball at Aunt Rachel's'.
July 8 - 1970
Today Mom, Dad, Uncle Dave and Aunt Erma and family went to Florida by way of St. Augustine and Gainesville. Clayton wanted to take me out Friday night, but since it's Dad's last night we won't.
-------------------------------------------------------
Note: This is when Dad was leaving for Vietnam.
July 9, 1970
Tonight around 6:00 Mr. Bill came.
July 10, 1970
This afternoon I made Dad a goodbye cake and it wound up being an awful looking thing. Dad gave me a blessing this afternoon and I wound up bawling. Tonight the Cooper's, Wilkerson's and Solomon's came over and brought some ice cream and goodies over for a little party. Wally Allen called me from Live Oak for a date tomorrow but we put on the roadshows. We just finished having a little party for Dad in his room.
July 11, 1970
This morning at 4:45 we got up to see Dad leave. We had a prayer before he left and when Dad finished everyone was crying even Uncle Dave. It just seems unreal still. We had family prayer tonight.
July 12 - 1970
There were gobs of people at Sacrament Meeting tonight. Before it started, Ken called me in the Branch President's office and told me that I had been chose by the branch presidency to be Youth of the Year. Then he had to write down a lot of my qualifications. It would be so neat to win it in the mission.

Diary Diddle - June 20
June 20, 1965 - We left Japan today on Continental Airlines. It was just like a dream. We left at 7:00 p.m. and arrived at Travis, AFB California at 12:20 p.m. We got our car and found a hotel. We visited my Great Aunt and Uncle.
------------------------------------------------------
Note: With the International Date Line, it seems as though we actually got to California before we left Japan.

Wednesday - 1969
Today Mom, Dad and Jimmy left. I got a big list of things to do and boy am I going to be busy. I started washing the quilts tonight. We had TV dinners for dinner. Kenny Smith came over when we got home and I had my pajamas on. I didn't let him in.
------------------------------------------------------------
Note: I wouldn't have let Kenny Smith in even if I'd had on a ballgown and tiara. I loathed Kenny Smith. He's probably a multi-billionaire now and turned out to be great-looking, but that didn't change things then.

Tuesday - 1969
Mom, Dad and Jimmy leave tomorrow for Georgia. Jimmy's going to stay at grandmother's house till we move. Dave gave me $10.00 and the car. Mom gave me a bunch of work instructions and TV dinners. Most of my drawers are empty as is most of the house.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Note: Wow, $10.00 must really have gone a long way back in 1969!

Diary Diddle - May 23
1969 - Friday
Today was the best day I've had in a long time. To begin with, it was the last day of seminary...2nd period Business Law, a girl who is an ex-hippie came and talked to us about some of the things she used to do. She told us about taking LSD and marijuana and how she finally had a bad trip that lasted for two days and then she got off drugs. Tonight was the Seminary graduation. I sat by William Stapleton at the head table since I'm a district officer. I wore my pink dress I made and everyone liked it. After we got the awards, we had the dance. At first everyone wasn't dancing to the band. I finally got asked to dance. One time I was sitting by Mom and Dad and a guy with a beard asked me to dance. He was so-o-o good looking. His name is Jim and he's a senior at West Florida University. I'm the only girl he danced with. He also plays drums in a band.

1969 - Friday
I went babysitting and made $2.00. Dad bought a new iron today with teflon coating.
----------------------------
Note: Ooooh weeeee - teflon coating!
1970 - Saturday
Kenny Smith cam to our house last night...Trying to finish three dresses for tomorrow.
Note: Kenny Smith was only one of two guys that I absolutely detested. He was G.I. stationed at Eglin AFB and attended our ward when I was about 17 years old. He was in love with me and just wouldn't leave me alone. I was never nice to him and never ever gave him the time of day. Mom and Dad thought it was funny watching how I tried to avoid him.
The other guy I could not stand was Pat Davis. He was a friend of Donald's and he and Nancy set me up on a blind date with Pat. I couldn't end the date soon enough!!!

"I just got back from babysitting. I made $2.00 and gave $1.50 to Mom...One of my favorite Songs is on the radio now. It is "Atlantis" by Donovan who is from Scotland".
------------------------------------------------------
Note: Many years later, I'm beginning to see a pattern here when it came to my babysitting. I spent my time making some monies and it appears that my mom was my "babysitting pimp" as she seemed to be taking a substantial portion of my earnings. Hmmmmm.
As for the song and Donovan...Generation X moviegoers can thank Donovan for producing Ione Skye. Aging Aquarians, such as myself, know that Donovan was one of the key artists of the revolutionary 1960s. He started his career as Britain's answer to Bob Dylan. He sang Sunshine Superman" just in time for the Psychedelic revolution and later "Mellow Yellow." He was so groovy!
The continent of Atlantis was an island
which lay before the great flood
in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed
to the South and the North Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,

My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh
My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah
Oh glub glub, down down, yeah
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah
Saturday - 1970
The whole family piled into the new car and went out to the airport and saw the Goodyear Blimp land...Tonight we went to the base and saw "Mosquito Squadron" starring David McCallan.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Note: I had the biggest crush on David McCallam which started when he was in the television show "Man From U.N.C.L.E. So, I was going to enjoy this movie, no matter what.

1969 - Thursday
I went babysitting and their little baby did a read bad B.M. and I gagged a few times. I made $2.25 and gave $2.00 to Mom.
(Wow, that was pretty good money back them, but it wouldn't go very far now and I'll bet it would be much more expensive).

Diary Diddle - May 5
1969 - Monday
Today was a good day considering it was Monday. Mom, Susan, Nancy and I went to the movie and saw "Live A Little, Love A Little". Elvis sang "The Edge of Reality" and the dance he and some of the girls did to it was so kool! Started on a diet today. I weigh 129 lbs.
--------------------------------------------
Just for the record, I was not and am not an Elvis Fan, but my mom was. I found a copy of the song with the dancing that apparently I thought was so "kool". Can I just say that time has changed my perspective on that song?! It sounds and looks so cheesy now and you'd have to velcro me to a chair to watch it again.
How about that shiny blue suit! It apparently helped Elvis click with the chicks.

Dear Diary We went to Carla and Dexter's wedding today. It was real nice. Mom and Dad went to Mobile after the wedding and we kids stayed for the reception and then I drove us home. I took we kids to the movie later and we saw "Where's Jack?". It was a pretty good movie meaning good! Susan and I had a fist fight tonight and she snagged my thumb and it bled all over my nightgown. Mom and Dad won't get home till late tonight or early morn. 10:00
-------------------------
Who the heck is Carla and Dexter? If the pretty good movie really mean "good!", why didn't I just say so? I wonder what was the reason for a fist fight with Susan. Must have been pretty good. And, who cares what time I went to bed?
