Mom's Diary Diddle

July 21, 1961 - Had my hair shampooed again today.  I just love all the hair styles I get.

Mom all "dolled up" in a dress made by her Japanese seamstress and a new hairstyle.  The cast on her leg?  That happened when she went ice skating in Tokyo with me and other branch members and broke her leg.

July 14, 1963 - Oh happy day.  Jim was made an elder today at conference.  Don set him apart with Brother Anderson, , David and McClelland.

Mom's Diary Diddle

July 10, 1963 - Took one of my pearls.  Had Jim a tie tack made for his birthday.

July 11, 1962 - Had to let Emico go when we moved to Johnson from Yokota.  We all miss her.  We are enjoying Japan.
----------------------------------------------------
Note:  Emico was the maid mom was able to hire for only a very few dollars a week.  I remember that I loved her so much, but we kids probably gave her a hard time.  Remember we ranged in ages from 3-10 at that time.

July 13, 1963 - The children and I gave Jim his birthday gifts tonight.  He was well please with his pearl tie tack.

Note:  Even at today's prices, the two permanents would only cost $17.60.  I

Mom's Diary Diddle

June 24, 1961 - Today we go to the squadron picnic.  It is raining.  Hope it clears up.  (Then in different ink, Mom writes, "What a lousy picnic").

This is a picture of an Air Force party, but this one was in 1952.  Notice Dad at the end of the table and Mom to his left.

Mom's Diary Diddle

June 12, 1961 - I had the girls hair cut today.  All for only 300 yen.  It is hard to believe.  No more haircuts for me.

This is a picture of a later visit to the beauty salon to get our hair fixed.  Lovely aren't we?

Mom, Nancy, Susan and me, Carol
-------------------------------------------------------------
Note:  Even at today's rate, 300 yen = $3.24.  Wow, really cheap haircuts!

June 13, 1961

Today I made "Tiger" some p.j.'s and went to the commissary.  A very busy day.
------------------------------------------------------------
Note:  "Tiger" was Jimmy.  I don't know how he got that name though.

Susan, age 7, "Peanut", age almost 6, me, age almost 9,  "Tiger" age 2 and the father, age almost 29, parental unit on our way to Japan.  This was at the Grand Canyon or Painted Desert.

Mom's Diary Diddle

June 2, 1961 - We cleaned our house some today.  It's beginning to look real good.  Wish I could get a letter from home.

June 3, 1961 - Our household goods came today.  Sure was good to see them again.

June 4, 1961 - Today I made curtains for our house today.  Tomorrow is moving day.

June 5, 1961 - We made it.  I was so happy I got a new stove.  I'm well pleased with our furniture.
------------------------------------------------------------
Note:  Our furniture was government issued.  You went to a large warehouse and basically checked out furniture and then returned it in good shape.

Mom's Diary Diddle

May 30, 1963 - I took my first ride on a Japanese train and subway today.  Went to Tokyo to see "How The West Was Won".  I went with friends and had a very nice time.
------------------------------------------------------------
Note:  This was an epic movie back in those days.  It was released world wide and finally made it to Japan about a year after its release.

Mom's Diary Diddle

May 29, 1961 -

My darling bought me a flower.  I went to the B.X. again today.  Put the kids in the nursery.  Got myself a new pair of p.j.'s.  I think they are real cute.
------------------------------------------------------
Note:  Dad must have found out she'd had a bad day the day before and he'd better do something to make things better, huh?

Mom's Diary Diddle

May 28, 1961 - Sunday

What a day.  I am so tired of staying cooped up, I could scream.  Nancy fell off the ladder to the bunks.  Took her to the doctor.
------------------------------------------------------------

Note:  If I was 27 years old and had four children ranging in age of 2-9 and I had just moved to a foreign country, couldn't speak the language, had no car to go anywhere and all my neighbors were strangers, I would probably SCREAM TOO!!!

Mom's Diary Diddle

May 22, 1961 - Sure is warm on Wake Island.  I wouldn't want to live here.  But the water is pretty.

-------------------------------------------------------
Note:  After leaving Hawaii, our plane had to land on Wake Island to refuel.  All passengers were loaded onto a bus and taken to the base cafeteria for some lunch.  I, too, remember it being very hot.

Wake is located to the west of the International Date Line and sits in the Wake Island Time Zone, one day ahead of the 50 U.S. states.

Although Wake is officially called an island in the singular form, it is actually an atoll comprising three islands surrounding a central lagoon having a coastline of 12 miles (19 km) in the North Pacific Ocean.
