After leaving Tensleep (population 50), we headed to Shell by way of another scenic backway. On the way we wanted to stop by the Medicine Lodge Archeological Site. We spotted this herd of horses below the mountain ridge.
One of the major archeological sites in the U.S., Medicine Lodge is known for its petroglyphs and pictographs which are thousands of years old. To date, 60 different cultural levels have been discovered within the 200-acre archeological area, which document the ways that Indian lifestyles in the region have changed over time. The Park also has five distinct vegetation zones within a 12-mile radius of Medicine Lodge, from desert basin to big mountain meadows.
Looks like Jinks and Speed left their marks a couple of times.
This is where we had our picnic lunch.
