Flat Stanley

A friend of mine named Angie is a schoolteacher outside of Atlanta. Her K/1 class is participating in the "Flat Stanley" project and has asked that I be part of it. Her students have made flat dolls of themselves and one of them will be mailed to our home. Here is a copy of her email:

HI Carol-

Thanks for agreeing to take a flat student to WY! What a treat it will be for my kids to see snow in photos!

You probably know the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. Stanley gets squished flat by a bulletin board so his mom can mail him places. My class made flats of themselves and we are mailing them all to as many different places in the states and around the world as we can!

Our main goal is to become familiar with different places. We know everywhere doesn't look like Atlanta! Please take your flat student as many places as you can and hold it up with you in pictures of different places, or pose the flat by itself in a photo.

We would really love to see our flat in nature in your city, at a grocery store, at a school, or any other place you think may help us realize things are different everywhere. Please document your photos with captions or stories so we will know where the flat was. You can e-mail the photos and captions/stories or print and mail them. We would also love a post card or two of our flats adventures with you and any 'treats' from our flat along the way.

Our flats are heading out in the mail as we speak. We need them all back home by April 15.....but they can come back earlier if you get 'done' with them sooner.

Please send me your mailing address in Casper along with any questions and we'll get a flat right out to you.

Thanks again!

So, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our very special guest in the coming days. Stay tuned! And, in case you aren't familiar with Flat Stanley (like Joe), here is a little more information...

Stanley Lambchop and his younger brother Arthur are given a big bulletin board by their Dad for putting pictures and posters on. He hangs it on the wall over Stanley's bed, but during the night the board falls from the wall, flattening Stanley in his sleep. He survives and makes the best of his altered state, and soon he is entering locked rooms by sliding under the door, and playing with his younger brother by being used as a kite. Stanley even helps catch some art museum sneak thieves by posing as a painting on the wall. But one special advantage is that Flat Stanley can now visit his friends by being mailed in an envelope. Eventually Arthur, who tires of all the attention Stanley has been getting, reverts Stanley to his proper shape through an air pump used for football.
